Laura led a call titled “Why Can He? – The Differences Between Men and Women” where she discussed:
- Why men can typically eat more calories than women, largely due to differences in body size, lean mass and overall energy requirements.
- Why men can appear to lose weight faster, and why comparing percentage of body weight lost rather than simply pounds or kilograms gives a fairer comparison.
- Differences in strength and muscle between men and women, including the impact of testosterone and puberty, while highlighting how well women respond to resistance training.
- Women’s advantages in muscular endurance and fatigue resistance, including differences in slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibres.
- Differences in body-fat storage, including women’s tendency to store more subcutaneous fat around the hips, bum and thighs, versus men’s greater tendency towards visceral abdominal fat.
- How menopause changes women’s fat distribution and bone health, and why looking after strength, muscle, movement and overall health becomes increasingly important with age.
